Christmas is Coming!

Yes, folks, less than a month til that Wondrous Day. ;)  How many of you have your shopping finished?  I have actually begun a little bit of mine - stocking stuffers, which are always such fun to pick out.  If anyone would like to see certain things under the tree on that Wondrous Day, please forward your wishes to me, Blingmama, so that I can shop appropriately!

Tom has been on the hunt for a mandolin....is there an 'e' at the end of that word? I think for the piece of kitchen equipment it is there, but not for the musical instrument, and, of course, Tom would be wanting the musical instrument and not the piece of kitchen equipment.   The spring musical at GHS is going to be Fiddler on the Roof, and I guess there is a place in the pit for a guitarist/mandolinist (is that even a word?), and Tom's hoping to win that spot.  However, there are no mandolins to rent, and there IS a boy in the orchestra who plays the mandolin but not the guitar....Tom, of course, plays the guitar but not the mandolin.  His guitar teacher owns a mandolin, and has told Tom that he could learn the parts on the mandolin, no problem, by the time of the musical, but the tryouts for the musical are in less than two weeks......anyone who'd like to offer up a prayer or something like that in Tom's favor could do so, please. :)

Speaking of The Boy, he's also being inundated with letters and emails from various colleges and universities (alas, Harvard and Yale are not amongst them), reminding him that he's not yet applied to their stellar institutions, and entreating him to do so.  Why weren't they sending out this stuff in MAY, for heaven's sake? It's getting a little late in the game to send in college applications NOW!!!! GRRR!

I had lunch with Miss Aimee yesterday - she'd made some delicious stew that no one in her family seemed to like very much, and she was loath to toss it down the garbage disposal, so I scarfed some down yesterday after dropping off Kiersten at preschool.  I thought it was very tasty, with the teeniest addition of a little bit of you-know-what.  (If you don't know what I added, then you don't know me and shouldn't be reading this...)

Blingdaddy had to see the chemo nurse yesterday and was told to stop taking the new (supposedly) Miracle Drug, as he had developed several blisters on his feet, and was also experiencing blurred vision in his left eye.  It seems as though this drug affects his vision, as the first week he took it, he noticed the blurred vision in his right eye on the fifth day (which, as you may recall, an opthamologist said was a cataract, but that eye has since improved, so it's probably NOT a cataract, as they don't spontaneously get better, do they?), and now he noticed the blurred vision in his left eye on the fifth day of taking that drug.  We are wondering what the oncologist will have to say about all of this next Wednesday, when Blingdaddy is scheduled to see him again.

You will all be surprised to hear that I've already gotten up the outside Christmas decorations....and they've been up for more than a week now.  No tree yet, but that will appear shortly, as if by magic. :)

Julie & Co will be arriving in Chicago on December 20th, for those of you who are not already aware, and will leave on the 27th.  I believe that Aimee & Co are going to be departing for Parts South (AKA Gulf Shores, AL) on the same day?  I'm a tad foggy on that detail at the moment.....

The pond behind the house (I know it's probably not technically a pond, but I just can't think of what else to call it) has been frozen for two days now.  I miss seeing the waves, but the frozen surface is kind of interesting to look at, too. :)

Can't wait for the holidays when everyone is gathered in the BlingMansion. :)

Oh, Dear!

So BlingDaddy has begun his new chemo drug yesterday.  So far, not too awful. :)

And I have been having what seems to be horrendous tooth pain since Monday.  I confess, I've had pain in my tooth for years, but never paid much attention to it, in my usual ostrich-like way.  Probably six months ago, the pain kind of morphed into my jaw.  I did have a few nagging thoughts that I should go to a dentist and have it checked out.  Well, this morning the pain was so awful that I broke down and called a dentist recommended by a neighbor, and asked if the dentist performed root canals, as I was sure that since the tooth that I thought was bothering me already has a filling.  The receptionist said that the dentist did not do root canals, but gave me the name of an endodontist in the area.  Long story short, I saw the endo today.  After about half an hour of making me bite on hard things, tapping my teeth with some sort of hammer-like tool, spraying intense cold out of a can onto a dental instrument and then putting the cold metal on my teeth, and, my personal favorite, placing boiling hot water on my teeth, (and also taking two x-rays of my back teeth that involved lots of gagging and drooling on my part) the endo told me that he could not tell exactly which tooth my pain was coming from, gave me three Advil (I had never taken Advil in my life, but now I have a really large bottle of it sitting on the kitchen counter), and told me that maybe I should get a second opinion. Or just wait to see if the pain localized more.  And for that, I got to write out a check for $147.00.  I am sooo pleased.

And now BlingDaddy wants to take me to see a neurologist, because he is sure that I am experiencing the joys of trigeminal neuralgia, just like his Mommy.  I sure hope not.  I guess a cracked tooth would be preferable, yes?

And that's the news from Geneva.

Glorious Autumn!

Bet you all thought that the cat had gotten my tongue and ripped it out, but I assure it's still there, wagging away like always.  It's just that my fingers aren't doing the walking lately.  There you go, all of the trite, meaningless phrases you can stand for the entire month gotten out of the way all at once. :)  September was the cruelest month so far this year (Forget that dead poet who claimed that month was April, and August was not so hot, either), containing Kelly's accident, Matt's hospitalization, and BlingDaddy's  not so hot scan results, but October has had nowhere to go but up.  (Oops, I lied - there's another trite one for you!)

Aimee is now thirty three years old, Josie is nearly 24 months, and we are all steaming full speed ahead towards my favorite holiday of all - CHRISTMAS!!!! :)  Now you all know that is a dang lie, but let's pretend for a moment that it's true.  It's perhaps a little bit true, as Christmas is the next time the entire clan will be together, but the time leading up to the actual week of fun can be stressful for all.  Here's hoping that we are all too busy to notice the stress.....when Christmas comes along, Kate will be halfway through her Masters degree!  Certainly an occasion for merriment, at least on her behalf; our Boston Contingent will be with us here in Chicago again; and, of course, there will be PRESENTS!!!! :)

Also, by that time, Thomas will most likely have decided where he will be attending college next year.....erm, well, maybe not.  If memory serves, students don't have to finalize their choices until May 1st, supposing, of course, that there are actually CHOICES and not just A CHOICE.

Today I face-timed with Miss Josie and her Mama on my iPad.  How fun!  I had forgotten that such a thing existed.  Should anyone else want to try it with me, I generally have the iPad sitting out in the Family Room and might even hear it 'ring'.   At least I heard it today.

Kelly is progressing well with her therapy....if only that thumb would get moving!  The rest of the fingers are doing well, but the thumb is lagging a bit behind.  And bless Matt's heart for continuing to drive her to and from school, as she still does not feel confident driving with only one hand (and the non-dominant one, at that!) on the wheel.  Kelly, Kiersten, Miss Josie, and I went to court last week to see that the scumbag who hit Kelly received a 'guilty' on his ticket for Failure to Yield, but only Kelly was able to enter the courtroom.  No children allowed, so I sat outside with the little ones, feeding them pretzels and Cheerios, and anxiously waiting to hear what happened inside.  I confess that when I saw the jerk saunter out of the courtroom, I momentarily believed that he'd gotten off, as he was totally swaggering, and had a disgusting smirk on his face.  I still want to run my fingernails down his face a few times, and kick him where it hurts, but I guess I'll never get to do that without going to jail for assault.  It's crazy how much I want to cause pain to anyone who hurts one of my babies.....but I suppose all mothers feel the same way.....or do they?  Perhaps I'm just an especially vindictive and bloodthirsty Mama.

Halloween is just around the corner, but it does not seem as though the neighborhood is quite as 'decorated' as usual....I'm not sure if I will be able to summon the energy to put up any decorations.  They are buried in the mess in the basement.....Oh, for a dumpster to appear on the driveway! I could fill it in an flash. :)

It appears that TommyBoy will not be going to All-State this year, but rather, just to the IMEA sectionals.  Some of his talented musical friends did not even make it that far.  What's up with the judges this year?  So hard to understand how someone can make it to All-State one year and suddenly not be talented enough to make it the next.  Tom definitely has grown in his musical ability during the past year.  He's nearly bursting out of the house! hahaha

Miss Aimee was telling me today about how all of her weekends are basically booked until about ten days before Christmas!  Lots of photography appointments, parties, and a trip to Boston that I just heard about today!  It definitely makes it seem as though the Universe has sped up, as I have been claiming for the past twenty years now. :)  In fact, the other day on the Science Channel, BlingDaddy and I were watching a terrifying program featuring physicists discussing the expanding Universe and it appears that not only is the Universe expanding, but it is, in fact, expanding at quicker and quicker rates.  Told you so!

Since I can't end on a terrifying note, I will tell you all to check out the darling picture that Julie posted on FB this afternoon of Miss Stella Jane crawling through a little collapsible tunnel.  The look on her face is great!  And then after you're finished with that, check out Aimee's annual family picture if you have not done so already.  Another lovely vignette.  I showed the website to a knitting friend today, and she was duly impressed.  Dang, but I have talented kids! :)  I can only believe that all of this amazing stuff is spilling forth onto the next generation as well.  Love you all so much.

Happy September!

So I've been very lax again, and most of the family didn't know about Tom playing at Festival of the Vine on Saturday.....but Sam's mom (Sam is the new drummer in the group) has kindly uploaded a video of one of the songs to FB, and I've 'shared' it on my page, so at least you can see a little bit of what they did.....frankly, Tom, BlingDaddy, and I all think that they need to can the trombone player - he just plain stinks - but what can you do?  It's not up to Tom.  I think he had at least a little bit of fun, and he did get paid for the gig, so that's always good, right?

Yesterday was nice, too.  Grandma M took me shoe shopping for my birthday, and she was really quite extravagant - I came home with four pair of shoes, and BlingDaddy received a pair as well.  We also had a lovely lunch/early dinner with Grandma.  It was altogether a beautiful day.  The weather was glorious yesterday, and continues to be so today! Perfect Early Autumn, my favorite. :)  This morning when I drove BlingDaddy to the train, the car 'told me' it was 48 degrees!!!!  Supposed to get into the mid seventies by two o'clock this afternoon.  As I said earlier, perfect!!!

Did you all know that Tom was accepted at Iowa State several weeks ago?  We are debating whether or not he should apply to any other schools, as Iowa is a great engineering school, and it will actually cost less for him to attend that out-of-state school than it would cost for him to go to Champaign!  What is wrong with this picture?  Oh, yeah, we live in the Corruption State...that should be the tagline on the license plates, don't you think?  Certainly more representative of the state than "Land of Lincoln" these days.......

Very hard to believe that a year from now Tom will be off in his dorm room, studying his little heart out, but that's the truth of the matter.  So many things will have changed a year from now.....Stella will be walking and possibly talking, Josie and Hunter will be nearly three and already three, respectively, and Payton will be a FIFTH GRADER!  Okay, I will stop now, as I know that Aimee and Julie are getting distressed at the thought of all of these things. :)

It was so nice yesterday to arrive home laden with packages from shopping with Grandma to find three of my lovely daughters waiting in the family room!!!!  (As well as my lovely son and his lovely girlfriend, and two of my lovely grandchildren...)  It's been such a wonderful nine years having this house where there is room for everyone who wants to come over. :)  I guess this house will have a fond spot in everyone's memories, and I, for one, can only say that it's passed all too quickly for my taste.....when we first moved in, we planned on being here for only ten years, and now that ten years have nearly passed, it just seems as though ten years is not nearly long enough! :)  Oh, well, we shall see what happens......

Julie and I had a nice, long conversation yesterday morning, and she did say that they are hoping to get here the last weekend of September.  I've put it on the calendar, and hopefully everything will work out so that Julie, Scott, Hunter, and Stella can spend a few days here at the BlingMansion and everyone can stop by for a visit.  Julie said she'll let us know if/when she gets the tickets finalized, so stay tuned.  :)  (Yes, I know that you really don't check in much anymore since I've been such an abysmal failure at keeping you all updated, but one never knows, does one?)

Everyone needs to keep fingers crossed for Tom's IMEA audition in a few weeks - he is really hoping to get to go to State again this year, but we all know that the Flying Finger of Fate is notoriously Fickle.

BlingDaddy will be having another scan in a few weeks, so fingers crossed for that as well...probably MORE fingers crossed for that one than for Tom going to State, let's face it. :)

Well, I need to upload some pictures from the weekend, so I will sign off.  Hopefully I will sign back on sooner than last time.

Holy Crap, It's August!

Well, I guess the title is nothing new, since I've been slackin' on the bloggin', but I can't think of anything more original.......

KK's birthday is tomorrow!!! Holy 28 Years Old, Miss Kate!  How did you get to be the same age as moi?

Okay, so we are sitting here having an enlightening conversation regarding weight loss.  Payton noticed that the cover of Woman's World has a line about losing ten pounds in two weeks, and commented that 'that's unhealthy, because you're only supposed to lose two pounds a week'.....so Tom asked if you could lose two pounds in a day by pooping and not drinking, and I said yes, and then Aimee said you could GAIN two pounds in a day by not pooping and drinking.....and we all had a chuckle!!! :)  Hope you did, too.

And now on to cuteness:  Miss Kelly has stopped by on her way home from having her cracked windshield replaced, and she's showing Josie the video she made of the two of them on Friday when Kelly was babysitting.....Josie is entranced, and keeps saying 'Hi' to the video.....too cute!  She's eating meatballs that Tom had just nuked but abandoned in favor of Chinese with Miss Kel.

It's been raining all day here, but that's a good thing, because we just had the Rabbit-Ravaged Hydrangeas in the front of the house replaced, and now I don't actually have to PAY for the water to make the plants healthy!   Yippee!!!!!

And Aimee just shared the news that Mo's third baby will be a girl!  Kelly and I cheered.  Not that little boys are not wonderful, because they ARE, but Mo already has two wonderfuls, and now it's on to Superwonderful. :)  J/K

And now we are having an interesting conversation about 'girly' girls and less girly girls.  And so it goes - now the conversation has turned to Vegas.  Hoping that it turns out to be as fun as everyone is hoping it will be.  But then again, how could it not be?

August is shaping up to be another busy month - hope you like shopping, because there's LOTS of gifts to buy!  LOL

Nearly July!!!!

I honestly do not understand how time can possibly be passing as quickly as it is, but, of course, such is life.  There is much I will never understand, isn't there?

Here we are, end of June:  Relay for Life is over (thank heavens!), and our trip to New Mexico is already just a memory as well......I have decided that travel is what we all need more of! Do you agree?  It is so amazing to see other parts of the country (and, hopefully, world) as yet unvisited, and I am hoping that lots more travel is in my future. :)

Of course, the biggest news of all is that Tom received his official Driver's License yesterday.  I spent the night in near-hysteria when he was allowed by Blingdaddy to drive to his guitar lesson and then on to Katie's - he left the house at 7:30 PM and arrived home at 10:30 PM.  I suppose that eventually this, too, will become 'old hat' for me, but until that time, Oh, dear!

New Mexico Eve

Hi All!

In about 12 hours Blingdaddy and I will be boarding our flight to Albuquerque!  How neat is that?  We are both very excited to be taking this trip, and I am going to take so many pictures your heads are going to spin! :)  I am making up for all of the pictures I neglected to take when you were all little - in my defense, it was kind of costly to develop them all of the time, and I did not have access to an easily-mastered camera like I do now. :)

In any event, we should be able to FaceTime with those of you who have iPhones, as Blingdaddy decided to buy an iPad tonight to take with on the trip. :)  OMG!!!  So exciting!  Tom was working to set it all up for us - added on music, Angry Birds, and lots of other goodies.  It will probably take a while for me to understand how to use it all, but I shall persevere!

We are all still talking about how wonderful it was to have the entire family together last week!!! Thank you so much, Scott, for deciding to take your business trip and bring Julie, Hunter, and Stella along!  I still have to post my pictures from the visit, and I have more than one hundred, so maybe when I get back from Santa Fe I will have a lengthy session with the downloading.

Payton seems to be doing well after mixing it up with a mailbox on Sunday - thank heavens for bike helmets - Aimee and Matt, you are good parents to have insisted on his wearing one.  I know that they had started to come into use when you guys were little, but I never made much of them, since "we grew up just fine without them".  Phooey on that.  I can't even imagine the injuries Payton might have suffered if he'd not been wearing that now ruined helmet.

Now I must gather my knitting together - couldn't take a long trip without something to occupy my hands, now, could I?  Love you all, and wish you were coming along, but we shall just muddle on by ourselves and try to enjoy it! LOLOL

No Surprises Today!

I am very happy to report that there were no surprises today at BlingDaddy's oncology visit today!  Yippee!!!!  Very uneventful office visit, with all of the bloodwork showing good levels of everything except B12, which was of no concern to the doc.  He just told BlingDaddy to get back on his B12 vitamins, since BlingDaddy obviously does not absorb vitamins the way 'normal folk' do.  :)  Is THAT any surprise? LOL

Tomorrow night is Tom's Jazz Band concert/dinner, and the Jazz Choir also performs on this occasion.  Tom is going to have an additional number featuring one of the Jazz singers, a piano, and his guitar.  Should be fun!  Starts at 6:30 if you're interested.  No dinner for you unless you've previously purchased a ticket, but attending the concert is free. :)
